(David Gates)
David Gates wrote
this song about his dad, who did not live to see his son’s success. It appeared on Bread’s 1972
album, Baby I’m a Want You,
and was a #1 hit in the U.K. and #5 hit in the U.S. Ken Boothe
and Boy George each covered it and likewise took it to the top of the
charts in the U.K. Other artists
and groups who have covered it include: Georgie
Fame, Jack Jones, Olivia Newton-John, *NSYNC, and Rod Stewart. In the new millennium, it has
appeared in a couple of movies:
Chrissie Hynde recorded it for the soundtrack
of Happy Feet and Vanessa Hudgens sang it in the film, Bandslam.
