One of the
first songs written by John Lennon to be inspired by Bob Dylan, “I
Should Have Known Better” opens with a harmonica and is considered to
be an early example of folk-rock.
It appears in the film, A Hard
Day’s Night, during a sequence on a “train” (which
was actually a van being rocked back and forth by a technical crew), and
the soundtrack of same. The
song was released as the flip side of “A Hard Day’s Night”
in the States, where it peaked at #53 on the top 100. It fared better in West Germany,
where it went to #6, and Norway, where it topped the charts, and has been
covered by artists and groups such as Eric Anderson and Phil Ochs, The
Beach Boys, The Punkles, She and Him, and The Skatalites.
