    This song is a Southern Spiritual credited to JW Alexander.  It was first recorded and became a hit in the late1940s by the Pilgrim Travelers, with their composer singing in the group.  It was later recorded by Sam Cooke, Nick Cave, Peter Paul & Mary, Mahalia Jackson and Ian & Sylvia to name a few.
