    Opus 7: 12 Concerti a Cinque

    (Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni)

This piece of music was a groundbreaker in its day as it was the first time an Italian composer has published a set of concerti with oboe.  He was very definite about adding "with" rather than "for" as he wanted it to be seen as a companion of the violin.  The Opus was dedicated to Giovanni Donato Correggio who was an Italian nobleman.  The twelve concerti are divided into four individual groups: the first one is a string concerto, the second and third for two oboes, and the fourth for a solo oboe.    Notes on the concerti in this Opus are as follows:

No. 1:   For strings only, this has been composed in the style of a sinfonia.

No. 2:   Has a noted a slow movement for strings.

No. 3:   For single oboe uses Albinoni's hemiola rhythmic style

No. 4:   The German violinist Johann Georg Pisendel  heard this and then took it back to Dresden  with him.

    No. 5:   For two oboes.

No. 6:   For single oboe uses Albinoni's hemiola rhythmic style

    Mo. 7:   For strings.

No. 8:   For two oboes, this is noted for its jig resembling rhythm which has been likened to Vivaldi's ritornello style.

No. 9:   For single oboe uses Albinoni's hemiola rhythmic style

    No. 10. For strings.

No. 11: For strings, this contains a part for solo violin.

No. 12: For oboe and strings
