    Paperlate*

    (Phil Collins/Tony Banks/Mike Rutherford)

    Genesis

(Charisma GEN 1, 33rpm mono/stereo)( UK EP PS)

This is one of the tracks recorded on the 1982 Genesis 3x3 EP which reached No.10 in the UK.  The idea for the song came from a line from "Dancing in A Moonlight Knight" in the Genesis album Selling England by the Pound, where Peter Gabriel had sung about a news-seller: "Paper late!, cried a voice  in the crowd".  The horn section in this recording is performed by Earth, Wind and Fire.  It was released as a single in the US after it was released on Genesis' Three Sides Live album, and reached No.32.

    * "Paperlate", "You Might Recall" and "Me and Virgil" are the tracks on the Genesis 3x3 EP which had been left off the Abacab album, as it was felt they didn't fit.  It reached No.10 in the UK.  The sleeve of it was designed to resemble The Beatles Twist and Shout EP.
