(Joseph Haydn)
This quartet was written as one of Joseph Haydn’s
Six Quartets for Flute and Strings, Opus
5, in 1768 for flute, violin, viola and cello. The introduction of a quartet where
a flute is accompanied by a string trio has been said to rival the immense
popularity of the string quartet and several quartets that were originally
meant for strings alone have since been arranged for flute.
In 1957 the Dutch music collector Anthony van Hoboken published
his J. Haydn: Thematisch-bibliographisches
Werkverzeichnis where he gave this piece the catalogue
number Hoboken II: G4.
It is included in the repertoire of the Nephele Ensemble, was a featured work in the Grand
Canyon Music Festival in 2000 with Clare Hoffman on the flute and has been
recorded by The London Trios and in The
Age of Elegance by The Galeazzi Ensemble.
