This piece was written for
the Arditti Quartet as a commission from the Melbourne Arts Festival. It received its premiere in 2001 at
the festival in Melbourne, Australia,
with Thomas Ades playing on the piano with the Quartet. It has also been recorded by the Belcea Quartet, again with Thomas Ades accompanying. The work lasts around 20 minutes and
comprises one-movement in a sonata form.
