(Hank Williams)

This song was written and
recorded in 1952 and released in 1953 after Hank Williams had died. It is a ballad which tells the
story of infidelity and the guilt that will be felt by the person who
cheated. It is said that the
lyrics were written down in the passenger seat of his car by Williams'
second wife, Billie Jean, as he dictated them after he had been thinking
about his first wife Audrey while he was driving. The song reached No.1 in the US
country charts and is considered one of the country greats with Rolling Stone listing it as No. 213
on their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song has been recorded by countless artists with
possibly the best known recordings by singers such as Patsy Cline, Elvis
Presley, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Joni James and Don McLean who
received a Grammy Award for his version in 1983. The song was the title of the 1964 film of Hank
Williams' life story and it has also been used as the title for a BBC TV
series.
