Maynard, James (1977-Present)

Trombonist from Norwich, England, who started out in a Salvation Army band and attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under Dudley Bright.  He also did stints in the European Union Youth Orchestra and Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra before joining the London Symphony Orchestra in 1998.  Other instruments he plays include the bass trombone, bass trumpet, euphonium and tenor trombone.

When he’s not performing, he’s often teaching or writing.  On 25th May 2007, the LSO Brass Ensemble performed his “Zoology” at Bath Abbey.  It had good company alongside Christopher Mowat’s arrangement of Camille Saint-Saens’s “Carnival of the Animals”.

The LSO Brass Ensemble participated in the Olympics handing-over ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral on 24th August 2008.  Their program featured “Blues March” by Benny Golson, “Fanfare” by Nigel Gomm, “La Mourisque” and “Pavane Battaille” from La Danserie by Tylman Susato, “Of Knights and Castles” by Raymond Premru and “Tango Jalousie” by Jacob Gade.

On 25th November 2012, the LSO offered up “Symphony No. 1” (“Titan”) by Gustav Mahler and “Violin Concerto” by Alban Berg, with soloist Leonidas Kavakos.

They gave the U.K. premiere of John Adams’ “Absolute Jest for String Quartet and Orchestra” at Barbican Hall on 27th January 2013.  The all-American affair opened with Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring—Suite” and Elliott Carter’s “Variations for Orchestra”.

In the field of music education, he has served on the faculty at the Royal Academy of Music as professor of bass trumpet and euphonium.
