Bright, Dudley

Composer and trombonist who attended the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and studied with Denis Wick and graduated in 1974.

In 1990, his song “Excelsior” received its world premiere at the International Youth Spectacular, which was hosted by London, England.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Clarence Adoo Brass Band, the Enfield Citadel Band, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the Halle Orchestra, the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Staff Band of the Salvation Army, the Regent Hall SA Band, the Salvation Army Canadian Staff Band, and the South London Fellowship Band.

He was a guest artist of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band on their album, History of Brass Band Music—The Salvation Army Connection, in 2004, taking up solo duties on “Concertino for Trombone and Band” by Erik Leidzen.

In 2007, he appeared on a CD entitled Supremacy, on which he performed his “Life’s Command” with the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army.  They gave the world premiere of “The Cost of Freedom” in May 2008 at the Sage Gateshead.  On 16th October 2009, they teamed up again for the world premiere of “Seize the Day” by Peter Graham at the Regent Hall Brass Arts Festival.

At Royal Albert Hall, the Staff Bands of the Salvation Army interpreted “Pursuing Horizons” as part of ISB120 in June 2011.

On 17th September 2011, he and pianist Stan Ford joined forces with the Enfield Citadel Band for a program that included “Brittania” by Kenneth Smith, “Christ is the Answer” by Ray Steadman-Allen, his own “Life’s Command”, and “Under Two Flags” by Bramwell Coles.

He and fellow trombonist Shinichi Ishikawa performed “A Song for Japan” by Steven Verhelst at the Embassy of Japan in March 2012, to mark the anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

On 24th March 2012, he participated in the British Trombone Society’s Trombone Day at Bromley Methodist Church.

He and Derick Kane were the guest soloists of the International Staff Band, Chatham and Kettering Brigades, at Regent Hall on 7th October 2012.  The concert, in celebration of composer Ray Steadman-Allen’s 90th birthday, included “The Eternal Quest” and “Trombone Vespers”.

He retired from the LSO after 18 years of performing with them.

Gamers may have heard him without even knowing it:  He performed on the soundtrack of Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom.

In the field of music education, he has taught master classes and served on the faculty at the Royal Academy of Music.
