Honore, Philippe (21st March 1967-Present)

Violinist born in Lyon, France, who attended the Paris Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music.  His teachers included Pierre Doukan and Gyorgy Pauk.  He has been a member of The Melchior Ensemble, mobius, and The Philharmonia.

In 1999, he accompanied Alison Nicholls at the World Harp Congress in Prague, The Czech Republic, and appeared on the mobius albums, Chamber Music and Bax:  Quintet for harp and strings; Elegiac Trio; Fantasy Sonata; Sonata for flute and harp.  He played the violin on the soundtrack of the Vikram Seth book, An Equal Music, in 2000.  In 2003, he performed on the Karl Jenkins CD, Adiemus V:  Live, and reunited with Alison Nicholls on Strings Attached.  His group, mobius, released Herbert Howells:  Rhapsodie Quintet; Violin Sonata No.3; Clarinet Sonata; Harp Prelude in 2004.

On 12th June 2006, he participated in the Salisbury International Arts Festival by playing a new work by Alec Roth and Vikram Seth, based on the poetry of Du Fu, entitled Songs in the Time of War, at Wilton Church.  The concert was reprised at the Chelsea Festival in St. Luke’s & Christ Church on 19th June and the Lichfield Festival on 6thJuly.  Before the year was out, two more CDs bearing Philippe’s name had graced the record shelves:  Villa Lobos:  Chamber Music by mobius and Overloaded:  The Singles Collection by Sugababes.

On 2nd June 2007, he and fellow violinist Maya Iwabuchi, pianist Gretel Dowdeswell and violist Vicci Wardman performed Sir Edward Elgar’s “Piano Quintet” and Gustav Mahler’s “Piano Quartet” at the Holywell Music Room in Oxford, England.

He accompanied Ex Cathedral on 8th June 2007 for a mostly Bach affair that featured the master’s “Chaconne for Solo Violin”, Komm, Jesu, komm, BWV 229 and Singet dem Herr ein neues Lied, BWV 225 and the premiere of Alec Roth’s and Vikram Seth’s “Confluences Part II – A Shared Ground” at Wilton Church.  In July 2007, the concert was repeated at Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire.

Philippe and cellist Steven Isserlis and soprano Patricia Rozario premiered Jonathan Dove’s “Minterne” in celebration of the Summer Music Society of Dorset’s forty-fifth birthday on 30th August 2007.

On 8th March 2008, The Melchior Ensemble interpreted Bach’s “Ricercare a sei voci” from The Musical Offering, BWV 1079, Felix Mendelssohn’s “Octet in E flat, Op. 20” and “Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence” at Peterhouse Theatre in Cambridge.

mobius premiered several works on 22nd March 2008 at Wigmore Hall, with a little bit of Mozart’s “Clarinet Quintet” and “Flute Concerto in D major, K. 314” thrown in.  New works performed included:  “Cellobius” by George Tsontakis; “Death by Figs” by Alec Roth; “Emerging” by Rhian Samuel; “Postlude” by Huw Watkins; “Rose” by Roxanna Panufnik; and, “Thorns” by Sally Beamish.

On 31st May 2008, Philippe and the Britten Sinfonia and tenor Mark Padmore delivered the world premiere of Alec Roth’s and Vikram Seth’s “Confluences Part III – The Traveller” at Salisbury Cathedral.  The program was reprised at the Chelsea Festival on 18th June and the Lichfield Festival on 8th July.  Complementing the third installment of “Confluences” were Gerald Finzi’s “Dies Natalis”, Henry Purcell’s “Chacony in G minor”, and Eugene Ysaye’s “Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor, Op. 27”.  Again, record shelves were stocked, or soon to be, with more recordings featuring Philippe’s virtuosity:  American Serenades, Messaien:  Chamber Works, and Songs in the Time of War.

On 17th June 2009, he helped premiere “Confluences Part IV – Seven Elements” at St. Luke’s & Christ Church as part of the Chelsea Arts Festival in London, England.  The concert was repeated at the Lichfield Cathedral on 15thJuly, and included The Shepherd on the Rock and “Violin Sonata in A major” by Franz Schubert.

In 2010, Philippe appeared on the Karnataka album, The Gathering Light.  He also participated in the Leicester International Music Festival Lunchtime Concerts with cellist David Cohen, violinist Maya Iwabuchi and violists Nicholas Bootiman and Rebecca Chambers at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery.

On 12th June 2010, mobius and the Orchestra and Choir of the Centre for Young Musicians Hackney appeared at Shoreditch Church in London in a program that comprised new works by Christopher Ash and Ben Oliver, “Divertimenti for String Quartet” by Benjamin Britten, “English Folk Song Suite” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and “Stucke for String Quartet and Ensemble” by Tristan Schulze.

Philippe was the guest leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on 10th February 2011 at Symphony Hall for a tripleheader that included Antonin Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 7”, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, and Schubert’s “Symphony No. 8” (“Unfinished”).

On 13th March 2011, he was the violinist du jour at St. Andrew’s Church as part of BBC Radio 4’s “Sunday Morning Worship”.

He performs here at the Salisbury Festival in 2009….
