He is a cornet player, flugelhorn player, trumpeter, composer and music director born in Rahway, New Jersey, to a family where his father, also Warren, played the bass and his brother, Allen, plays the clarinet.
He became a student of Pee Wee Erwin and became a professional jazz musician who often concentrates on swing. He was regularly heard working with Benny Goodman, Rosemary Clooney and Scott Hamilton during the 1970s and ‘80s.
He has worked as a leader and sideman with many other musicians through the course of his career to date who include Howard Alden, Alan Barnes, Jimmy Cobb, Tony Coe, Vic Dickenson, Woodie Herman, Eddie Locke, Gerry Mulligan, Houston Person, Bucky Pizzarelli, Randy Sandke, George Shearing, George Wein and Bob Wilber to name just a few.
He released his debut recording in 1975 and has appeared on many since, such as more than 35 of his own that include Blues Walk, Horn of Plenty, An Affair to Remember, Jersey Jazz at Midnight, Shine and Warren Plays Warren as well as Tribute to Billie Holiday by Rosemary Clooney, Fortieth Anniversary Concert by Benny Goodman, Music of Jelly Roll Morton by Dick Hyman, Five For Freddie with Bucky Pizzarelli, What Headphones? by Andre Previn and My Time: The Anthology (1969-1997) by Boz Scaggs and Stardust: The Great American Songbook, Vol. 3 by Rod Stewart.
He can regularly be heard at jazz and swing festivals and events on a national and international level.
He has played on the soundtracks of Biloxi Blues and Money Pays among others. Outside of his performances he has also been involved with several stage and film productions where he was the Richard Gere’s tutor for his role as a trumpeter in The Cotton Club, has been the composer for The Luckiest Man in the World , the music director for Private Lives starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, an actor in Dr. Jazz and an actor and music director in The Gig.
In the world of musical education he works on the faculty of the Juilliard Jazz Program.
