Nocturnen

(Louis Andriessen)

This composition for two sopranos and chamber orchestra was written by the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, who was the son of the composer Hendrik Andriessen, in 1959.  He composed both the music and the text, from a poem he had written when he was young, under the tutelage of the composer and teacher Kees van Baaren.  The work was dedicated to the guitarist Jeanette Yanikian who would later become his wife in 1996.

The piece lasts between seven and nine minutes and was premiered at Pays-Bas, The Hague on 14th December 1959 by the soprano Elly Verhagen and the Royal Conservatory of the Hague Orchestra.

It has since been recorded by the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra with the sopranos Lisette Emmink and Claron McFadden.
