Baby, Come To Me

(Rod Temperton)

This song for a duo was written by Rod Temperton who made his name as a member of Heatwave and one of the songwriters for many artists that include George Benson, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer, Michael McDonald and James Ingram wrote this song.

Patti Austin originally recorded this duet with James Ingram with the backing vocals provided by Michael McDonald.  It was released as a track for Patti’s 1981 Every Home Should Have One, which was a Quincy Jones production.  Its first release as a single was in 1982 but it only scratched the surface of the Billboard Chart when it only managed to reach No. 73.

The song did get noticed by ABC, however, and was included in the popular soap opera General Hospital as Luke Spencer’s theme.  This was enough for it to pique the interest of viewers of the show and after countless inquiries about it the decision was made to re-release it in 1983.  This time its chart status was much superior when it shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the adult contemporary chart.  Although not achieving the same success on the UK chart, it still reached No. 11 there.

Several other duos have recorded this song over the years and these include Captain & Tennille and Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle.
