Assad, Sergio (26th December 1952-Present)

He is a guitarist, composer and arranger born in Brazil. His daughter is Clarice Assad and his brother and sister are Badi and Odair  Assad . He and his brother studied guitar for seven years with Monina Ravora, who had been a student of Andres Segovia and performed regularly in Brazil.

He made his US debut in 1969 in New York and often gives concerts and records with his brother Odair , as The Assad Brothers. His compositions include the pieces “Suite Brasileira”, “Summer Garden” and “Aquarelle” which was a mandatory piece in the 2002 GFA Competition.

As an artist he has performed with artists that include Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg , Yo-Yo Ma and Paquito D’Rivera. He and his brother received a Latin Grammy Award for Sergio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla and Obrigado Brazil which they collaborated on with Yo-Yo Ma and which won a Grammy Award in 2004.

As a teacher he has been on the faculty of the Conservatoire Royal de Musique in Brussels, Roosevelt University’s College of Fine Arts in Chicago and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
