Aichinger, Wolfgang (1952-Present)

Professsor and cellist from Wolfsberg, Austria, who attended the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and the University of Music and Performing in Arts in Vienna.  His teachers included Valentin Erben, Eberhard Finke, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Frieda Litschauer, Andre Navarra and Vladimir Orloff.

He has now retired but the groups with whom he has worked include Concentus Musicus Wien, Vienna Concertino and Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

In October 1971, he and violinist Gerald Aichinger and pianist Peter Holetschek appeared at Leoben Jugend musiziert where they recorded the “Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67” of Dmitri Shostakovich.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra performed at the University of Michigan’s Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor on 11th November 1988.  Their program comprised the overture from The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Der Rosenkavalier Suite, Op. 59” by Richard Strauss and Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14 by Hector Berlioz.

On 9th August 2009, he and flautist Barbara Gisler-Haase and pianist Alexander Rossler participated in the Vienna Music Seminar where they interpreted the “Souvenir du Rigi” of Franz Doppler.

The Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Eroica Trio offered up Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano, Op. 56” (“Triple Concerto”) in Foellinger Great Hall at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on 8th November 2011.  The concert concluded with Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73”.

Recordings on which Wolfgang appears include Georg Friedrich Händel:  Concerti Grossi Op. 6, Nr. 1-12 and Handel Edition:  Concerti Grossi/Water Music/Music for the Royal Fireworks with Concentus Musicus Wien.

In the field of music education, he has served as an adjudicator at international competitions, given master classes and workshops, served as Chair of the Hellmesberger Institute, tutored for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra’s youth program and taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts.
