Gibson, Matthew (1967-Present)

Double-bassist from Shropshire, England, who started out on cello at eight years of age, but whose teacher encouraged him to take up the double bass.  He furthered his education at the Guildhall School of Music, where he studied with Thomas Martin and Kevin Rundell.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Adhoc Humanitarians Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the LSO Chamber Ensemble, the Verdandi Camerata, and the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.

His talents do not end with the double bass, however.  On 17th February 2008, he narrated the LSO’s world premiere of the revised version of Two Sisters, A Rose, A Flood and Snow:  Four Tales of Enchantment by Alasdair Nicolson.

He also conducted the LSO on their August 2008 release, Bottesini:  Concertino in C minor/Duo Concertante on Themes from Bellini’s I Puritani.

The Verdandi Camerata gave the British premiere of “Fiddler’s Tale” by Wynton Marsalis at The Forge in London on 30th October 2010.

On 16th November 2010, the LSO Chamber Ensemble, LSO St. Luke’s Community Choir and LSO St. Luke’s Youth Choir Senior Choristers delivered the world premiere of Cicadas by Dagny Gioulami and Edward Rushton.

In April 2012, he and pianist Cwen Homa interpreted “Fantasy on La Sonnambula di Bellini” by Giovanni Bottesini, and he took part in the LSO’s performance of “Symphony No. 3” by Gustav Mahler.

Recordings on which he appears include:  EpiphanyHolst:  The Planets and Music of Hope by the LSO, and Fresh Aire 8 by Mannheim Steamroller.

In the field of music education, he has coached at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal College, and has been active in the LSO’s Discovery Day and Musicians on Call programs.
