Trumpeter who spent his childhood honing his craft, at the exclusion of just about everything else. He played in the Charleroi Area High School band, wowing his fellow students, faculty, and fans at football games, frequently playing solos.
After graduation, he attended Duquesne University, where a drummer named Ray DeFade invited him to play in his jazz ensemble. That ensemble went on to become the Paul Hubinon/Ray DeFade Orchestra, and cut a record for LaVere Records entitled “Gospel Goodness (Parts 1 and 2)”. Shortly after its release, they supported their recording with a concert at Stockdale Fire Hall, where they had more than a thousand screaming teenagers begging for more. It was clearly a portent of things to come.
In his short life, Paul managed to put together an impressive discography which would be the envy of someone who had lived twice as long. He recorded with Cannonball Adderley, James Brown, Glen Campbell, Harry Chapin, Cheech & Chong, Neil Diamond, Ella Fitzgerald, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Jim Horn, Thelma Houston, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, Billy Preston, The Righteous Brothers, Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, and Tavares. A member of the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra in the mid-’70s, he left his mark on film and television, performing on the soundtrack to The Mack, and yes, the trumpet solo on The Jetsons. Paul passed away on 25thMay 1977, in Hollywood, California. He was only 35.
