Ims, Christine

Violist who attended Juilliard, Ohio University and Yale, from whence she graduated with the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1983.

Groups with whom she has worked include the American Ballet Theater, the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, the Brewer Chamber Orchestra, the Bronx Chamber Orchestra, the Glimmerglass Orchestra, the Harmonie String Quartet, the Hunter College Orchestra, the Kansas City Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony, the New York City Ballet, the New York Pops, the New York Scandia Orchestra, the New York Viola Society, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, the Oklahoma Symphony, the Otsego Chamber Players, and the Sonora Ensemble.

On 10^th January 1994, she and Hsin-Yun Huang, Ann Roggen and Liuh-Wen Ting gave the world premiere of Rosemary Glyde’s “Suite for Four Violas” (“Weiji”) at Mannes College of Music.

She and Susan Jolles and Sue Ann Kahn did the same for Julie Mandel’s “Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp” at Queens College in April 1996.

On 21^st March 1997, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic celebrated its 25^th anniversary with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9 in D minor”. The “Ode to Joy” was counterbalanced by a musical tribute to the late David Einfeldt, 23-year veteran of the NPP, as Christine interpreted Paul Hindemith’s “Trauermusik for Viola and Strings”.

She and seven of her colleagues performed Peggy Swafford’s arrangement for eight violas of “A Finnish Folk Song” at CAMI Hall in a memorial concert for Harold Coletta on 1^st December 2002.

On 2^nd February 2003, the Harmonie String Quartet honoured the centenary of Sir William Walton in a performance of his “String Quartet in A minor” at Madison Avenue Christian Church in New York.

She was one of a half-dozen string musicians who gave the world premiere of Richard Lane’s “Canzona for Six Violas” at The Good Shepherd Faith Presbyterian Church on 11^th May 2003.

On 11^th February 2010, the New York Scandia Orchestra gave the American premieres of Anders Koppel’s “Concerto Piccolo” and Poul Schierbeck’s “I Danmark er jeg Fodt” in Victor Borge Hall at Scandinavia House.

They did the same for Franz Neruda’s “Cello Concerto” at Trinity Church on 9^th March 2010.

Recordings on which she appears include: Broken English and Strange Weather by Marianne Faithfull; the world premiere recording of George Frideric Handel’s opera, Faramondo, with the Brewer Chamber Orchestra; Living it All Wrong by Lee Feldman; the soundtrack of Ric Burns’ documentary, New York; and, Visions of Light and Mystery by Judith Sainte Croix.

In the field of music education, she has taught privately and as part of the Encore Music Program, and served as treasurer of the American String Teachers Association New Jersey chapter and president of the New York Viola Society.

Ohio University honoured her with its Distinguished Alumni Award for her vast contributions to classical music.
