Meyers, Cynthia

Flautist and piccolo player from Somerset, Pennsylvania, who started playing piano at three years of age.  She attended Somerset AreaSenior High School, Carnegie-Mellon University, and the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Jeffrey Khaner and earned her Master’s degree.  While attending school in Cleveland, she developed a penchant for piccolo, and studied this with William Hebert.

Groups with whom she has worked include the Boston Pops, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the New England Baroque Soloists, and the Omaha Symphony.

In April 2004, she and Jeff Robinson gave the world premiere of Concerto for Piccolo and Contrabassoon by Damian Montano with the Houston Symphony in Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts.

She joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2006.  On 7th September 2007, the BSO performed Concerto for Orchestra by Bela Bartok and Three Illusions by Elliott Carter.

The New England Baroque Soloists took the stage in Chapin Hall at Williams College on 4th April 2008.  Their program comprised: Adagio from Oboe Concerto by Alessandro Marcello; Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 2 and 5 and Concerto for Flute, Violin, Harpsichord, Strings and Basso by Johann Sebastian Bach; Cello Sonata in A major, G4 by Luigi Boccherini; Concerto for Two Horns, Two Oboes, Strings and Basso Continuo by George Frideric Handel; Concerto for Two Trumpets, Strings and Basso Continuo by Petronio Franceschini; and, Ouverture from Musique de Table (III) by Georg Philipp Telemann.

On 8th October 2009, Vasily Petrenko conducted the BSO in an all-Russian program that included The Isle of the Dead by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Scherzo fantastique by Igor Stravinsky, and Symphony No. 10 by Dmitri Shostakovich.

The Boston Pops celebrated their 125th anniversary on 2nd July 2010 with guest artists Michael Chertock, Idina Menzel and Doc Severinsen at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts.  The evening highlighted works made famous by the Boston Pops conductors, Arthur Fiedler, Keith Lockhart, and John Williams.

On 30th July 2010, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players offered up “Mladi” by Leos Janacek, “La Nouvelle Orleans” by Lalo Schifrin, “Opus Number Zoo” by Luciano Berio, and Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet by Gyorgy Ligeti.

They were joined by James David Christie, artist-in residence and organist at the College of the Holy Cross, on 10th April 2011 for a concert at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire.  The concert consisted of music by Jehan Alain, J.S. Bach, Alban Berg, Jacques Berthier, Georg Bohm, and Antonio Vivaldi.  James reunited with them for a similar program at St. Joseph Memorial Chapel on 23rd October 2011.

In the field of music education, Cynthia has given master classes, organized outreach concert, and served as the BSO Academy School Initiative’s UBS musician-in residence.

Recordings on which she appears include the soundtrack of The American ExperienceBeyond the Odyssey by her husband, Steve Laven, and Chris Botti in Boston.
