Nunen, Louis van

He is a bassoonist and teacher who studied at the Maastricht Conservatorium and works almost entirely in the Netherlands.

In August 1976 he became a member of one of the various Dutch Radio Orchestras and by the time of the new millennium he had worked with most, if not all of them as the Principal Bassoon.

In September 1976 he became the director of the Van Nunens Muziekbedrijf and still remains holding that position.

He still performs with the orchestras from the broadcasting industry and in 2009/10 he was a member of a quintet of woodwind musicians from these orchestras that performed an adapted version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures in an Exhibition for children at an afterschool foundation in Hilversum.  They gave workshops and involved the children by letting them make props and dance at the performance and also gave a special closed concert for disabled children at a later date.

In 2010 he attended the Music Guild at Hilversum where he gave a solo performance and explained the bassoon and its history to his audience.

Moving into the education side of things in 1984 he became a Professor of Bassoon at the Utrechts Conservatorium where he still teaches.  Two years later, in 1986, he took on a further teaching position as Professor of Bassoon at Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg and remained there until 2000.  Taking on even more teaching duties he became the Professor of Bassoon at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam and taught there from 1990 until 2000.  He has also acted as a judge in Dutch music competitions.
