Painter, Temple (14 June 1933-6th August 2016)

Keyboardist who obtained his organ degree at the Curtis Institute in 1956 and an honorary Doctorate degree at the Combs College of Music.

In 1962, he recorded a solo album, Temple Painter—Harpsichord Recital, which the New York Times lauded for being “the most satisfying” harpsichord album of the year.  Other recordings on which he appeared include the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia’s Gloria!  Gloria! andRoman Vespers, and Harold Boatrite:  Sonatas and Suites, which finds him doing double duty on harpsichord and piano.

As a soloist, he performed with The New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.  He spent forty years as harpsichordist with the aforementioned Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, of which he was a founding member, and forty-five years as organist at the Congregation Adath Jeshurun, which is located in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

In the field of music education, he spent thirteen years as Associate Professor of Music for Haverford College and lectured at Temple and Immaculata University.

Later years found him concentrating on the keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach, recording the master’s two- and three-part inventions and helping fellow keyboardist Theodore Hendricks-Verdejo prepare for a recital of The Goldberg Variations.

He died when he was 83 years old in August 2016 in Hahnemann University Hospital.
