Pospichal, Jan (1954-Present)

Violinist born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, who took lessons from his dad until he attended the Prague Conservatory and Music Academy.  His other teachers included Nathan Milstein and Franz Samohyl.

He joined the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 1980 and became their concertmaster in 1982.

On 9th November 2008, he conducted the Vienna Symphony strings in a concert that included Apollon Musagete by Igor Stravinsky, “Overture in C minor, D. 8a” by Franz Schubert and “Serenade in E flat major, Op. 6” by Joseph Suk.

He and fellow violinists Petra Brabcova and Jakub Fiser, cellist Stepan Drtina, violist Ondrej Martinovsky and pianist Ludek Sabaka appeared in Suk Hall at the Prague Philharmonia’s Orchestral Academy on 29th March 2010.  Their program featured “Capriccio No. 8, Op. 1” by Niccolo Paganini, “Rondo, Op. 70” by Franz Schubert, “Sonata No. 9 in A major” (“Kreutzer”) by Ludwig van Beethoven and “Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 94a” by Sergei Prokofiev.

On 8th November 2011, the Eroica Trio joined forces with the Vienna Symphony in a performance of Beethoven’s “Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano in C major, Op. 56” (“Triple Concerto”).  The concert concluded with Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73”.

Jan was the soloist in the Great Hall on 26th February 2012 when the Vienna Symphony offered up “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D minor, Op. 47” by Jean Sibelius and “Sarka”, “Vltava” and “Yvsehrad” from Ma Vlast by Bedrich Smetana.

Recordings on which he appears include:  Beethoven:  Serenade, Op. 8/Trio, Op. 9/3 with the Vienna String Trio; Bohuslav Martinu:  Works for Violins and Orchestra with the Vienna Symphony; Dvorak A.:  Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 53/Romance, Op. 11/Mazurek, Op. 49 with Jihoceska kormoni filharmonie; Haydn:  Zingarese/Landler/Nocturnes with Ensemble Bella Musica de Vienne; and, Schubert:  Trout Quintet/Notturno with Wolfgang Klos, Wilfriend Rehm, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Ernst Weissensteiner.

In the field of music education, he has taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, served as a tutor at the Bregenz Festival and given online master classes.
