He is a singer-songwriter, producer and artist, with aliases that include M and Comic Romance, born Robin Esmond Scott in Croydon, London.
He attended Croydon Art College in the late 1960s and here he became friends with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, but did not go into the clothing boutique business with them and concentrated on a musical career. He had begun writing songs while still at college and after having broadcast them on radio and television he decided to release his first album Woman from the Warm Grass which featured the group Mighty Baby as backing.
He spent the next few years in folk clubs and singing his own material and would often support artists such as Ralph McTell and David Bowie. In 1970 he moved into radio when he established The Voice, which was broadcast on Radio 3 but moving on he travelled throughout Europe and the United States.
Once back in England he made demos with Ronnie Scott, Terry Britten and members of Camel, and after entering the Search for a Star televised talent contest, EMI offered him a recording contract. He declined this offer because it was for him alone and not his backing band and he took time out to write the musical Heartaches & Teardrops and appear with various bands.
Eventually he became involved with the group Roogalator and produced their first single “Cincinatti Fatback” and first album Play It By Ear. In the mid 1970s he also produced Adam & the Ants and The Slits.
He had worked in Tokyo with Ryuichi Sakamoto on an album and lived in Paris from around 1978 where he worked with the photographer Jean Baptiste Mondino, started to record his own music which began with his “Moderne Man/Satisfy Your Lust”, and at the same time formed a band with session musicians and his girlfriend, Brigit Novik, which he called M, with their single “Pop Muzik” becoming a chart success in the US and the UK. He followed this up with several other chart singles and albums over the next few years.
Working with many musicians through his career he has performed with members of the Yellow Magic Orchestra and King Crimson and artists such as Thomas Dolby, Mark King, Ryiuchi Sakamoto, Andy Gill, Tony Levin, Phil Gould, his daughter Berenice Scott and many others. He spent 1983 and 1984 in Africa where he recorded Robin Scott & Shikisha and working in production. In 2017 he released his album Emotional DNA.
As an artist his work has been exhibited in London at the Ensign Gallery.
