Smith, Carole Mason

Bassoonist who has worked with the Dale Warland Singers, the Halama Wind Octet, the Minneapolis Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the SPCO Winds.

On 20th March 1983, she and other members of the SPCO accompanied the Dale Warland Singers in a performance Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor, BWV 232 at Orchestral Hall in Minneapolis.

She and fellow SPCO bassoonist Charles Ullery interpreted “Bounce” by Michael Daugherty at Ted Mann Concert Hall on 27th July 1993.  The recital also included Bohuslav Martinu’s “Nonet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon, Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass”.

On 25th October 2009, the SPCO Winds appeared in a chamber concert at the SPCO Center Music Room.  Their program comprised Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Sextet for Two Clarinets, Two Bassoons and Two Horns”, Georges Enesco’s “Dixtour for Wind Instruments”, Walter Piston’s “Three Pieces for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon” and Alec Wilder’s “Quintet No. 2 for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet Bassoon and Horn”.

Recordings on which Carole appears include Winter Morning Walks by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Maria Schneider and Dawn Upshaw.

In the field of music education, she has taught at Hamline University, Macalaster College and the University of Wisconsin at River Falls.

She has also served as the chairwoman for the Musicians of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
