He is a violinist and conductor born Simon Andrew Thomas Standage in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, who studied at Cambridge University and won a Harness Fellowship to study in New York City with Ivan Galamian.
He debuted in Wigmore Hall in 1972 and that same year became a founding member of The English Consort, where he was first violin until 1991. He also led the City of London Sinfonia, was a modern violinist for the English Chamber Orchestra, a co-founder of the Salomen Quartet and a guest performer with The Academy of Ancient Arts, and collaborated with Collegium Musicum Telemann and Haydn Sinfonietta.
In 1990 he co-founded Collegium Musicum 90 with the conductor Richard Hickox and with them has made numerous acclaimed recordings of composers such as Telemann, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Marcello amongst many others.
As a teacher he is a Professor of baroque violin at the Royal Academy of Music in London, teaches summer courses in Europe and the United States, and gives tuition in conducting and baroque violin at the Akademie fur Alte Musik Oberlausitz in Gorlitz, which is the easternmost city in Germany.
