Ullery, Charles

Bassoonist who attended the University of Arizona and the University of California in Los Angeles and studied with Norman Herzberg, Wendal Jones and Gordon Solie.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Blue Baroque Band, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, the International Double Reed Society, the London Sinfonietta, the Minnesota Bassoon Association, the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the Sixth Army Band and the Waukesha Symphony.

In July 1993, he gave the world premiere of “Dead Elvis” by Michael Daugherty.  Other works performed were Daugherty’s “Bounce”, with fellow bassoonist Carole Mason Smith, and “The Deathless Music of the Circling Stars” by Daniel K. Sturm.

Likewise, he premiered Russell Platt’s “Concerto Grosso for Bassoon and String Orchestra” with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota in the spring of 1997.

On 11th & 12th September 2009, he and Kathryn Greenbank performed Antonio Vivaldi’s “Concerto in G for Oboe, Bassoon and Orchestra, RV 545” with the SPCO at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

The SPCO teamed up with Cantus at Ordway Center on 9th September 2011 for the world premiere of “Luminous Body” by Craig Lucas and Nico Muhly.  The concert was rounded out by Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Concerto for Two Violins in D minor”, Johannes Brahms’ “Variations on a Theme of Haydn” and Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Sinfonia Concertante in B flat”.

In 2012, Charles was the featured soloist when the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra offered up Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra” at Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village, New York.

In the field of music education, he has served as an adjudicator at the IDRS Fernand Gillet Competition, given master classes, and served on the faculties of the Ball State University High School Bassoon Camp, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Macalaster College, Oberlin College, Saint Olaf College, the University of Minnesota and the Utah Music Festival & School.
