Yeo, Douglas (1955

Trombonist from Monterey, California, who was raised in New York and started playing at nine years of age. He attended Jefferson Township High School, New York University, and Wheaton College and studied with Keith Brown and Edward Kleinhammer.

In 1985, he became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Other groups with whom he has worked include the Athena Brass Band, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Berlioz Historical Brass, Boston Baroque, the Boston Pops, Chorus Pro Musia, the Gerry Mulligan Big Band, the Goldman Band, the Handel and Haydn Society, the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Natural State Brass Band, the New England Brass Band, the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Schoonhoven, the St. Antoni Chorale, the University of Washington Wind Ensemble, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

He and the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble delivered the world premiere of the “Concerto for Bass Trombone” by Vaclav Nelhybel in 1991.

In 1995, he and the University of Washington Wind Ensemble did the same with “Wildfire” by Lawrence Wolfe.

He and the Boston Pops performed the “Concerto for Serpent and Orchestra” by Simon Proctor under the baton of John Williams in May 1997.

The New England Brass Band named him their music director in 1998. On his watch, they have won the North American Brass Association National Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, and Recording of the Year from NABBA for Be Glad Then America.

He and the Boston Pops performed the “Concerto for Bass Trombone” by Christopher Brubeck in 1999. The last movement, “James Brown in the Twilight Zone”, was televised on Evening at Pops in 2000.

In 2000, he participated in the Historic Brass Festival, which was hosted by the University of Connecticut. He has also served as a clinician and guest artist at the International Trombone Festival.

The Handel and Haydn Society performed Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz and “Vespers of 1610” by Claudio Monteverdi in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The Handel and Haydn Orchestra interpreted Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Divertimento in B flat” and Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with the St. Antoni Chorale in 2005.

In 2005, he performed the ophicleide in a Chorus Pro Musia production of Romeo and Juliet by Hector Berlioz in Boston, Massachusetts.

He did the same with the Athena Brass Band at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, Kentucky, in 2005.

On 23^rd April 2009, he performed the last concert in the Squires Recital Series at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Berlioz Historical Brass gave the world premieres of “De Bronze et de Lumiere” by Therese Brenet and “Mendelssohn’s Seasons” by Clifford Bevan and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at Connecticut College on 19^th June 2009.

On 6^th June 2010, Douglas premiered David Herring’s “Theme and Variations on Arkansas Traveler” with the Natural State Brass Band at Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock.

He retired from the BSO and Boston Pops around 2012.

Recordings on which he has appeared include: America, American Visions, Chris Botti in Boston and A Splash of Pops by the Boston Pops; In the Family with Ronald Barron; and, his own Cornerstone, Le Monde du Serpent, Proclamation, and Two of a Mind, with David Chapman, Nick Hudson and the Williams Fairey Band.

In the field of music education, he has taught at the Banff Centre, The Catholic University of America, the Hamamatsu International Wind Instrument Academy, Indiana State University, Indiana University, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music.

He has also authored Mastering the Trombone with Edward Kleinhammer, as well as arranging Tomaso Albinoni’s “Trio Sonata” for trombone trio, and arranging and editing Trombone Essentials: 11 Recital and Contest Solos for Tenor and Bass Trombone.
