Yu, Yuan-Qing (c1971-Present)

She is a violinist born in Shanghai, China who won the Chinese Nationwide Violin Competition when she was 17.  She went on to win prizes in several other competitions on an international basis.

She studied at Southern Methodist University where she earned an Artist’s Certificate and a Master’s in Music.

She has performed as a soloist with the Monte Carlo and Radio France philharmonic orchestras and the London City orchestra as well as playing as a chamber musician.

She became the Assistant Concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1995 and gave the CSO premiere of Anthemes 2 by Pierre Boulez and then performed it at his eightieth birthday celebration concert in Berlin by invitation.

In other musical performances she has been heard in the MusicNow series at the Harris Teater, the Norton Building Concert Series, in regular performances for WFMT and with the Civitas Ensemble, which she co-founded with CSO colleagues in 2011.

Her recordings include Brahms – Violin Concerto/Sonata No. 3 and Mahler: Symphony No. 1 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Alla Zingarese with the Civitas Ensemble, Come On Up by Brian Cuthbertson and Augusta Red Thomas: Chamber & Piano Works and  New Music with Guitar, Vol: 5 by various artists.

In the field of musical education she has been an Adjunct Professor on the faculties of the Roosevelt University and Northwestern University.
