Albeniz, Mateo Antonio Perez de (1755-23rd June 1831)

He was a composer and priest born in Longrono, Spain in the  mid 18th century.

During the years 1800 to 1829 he worked as Maestro di Capella in chapels in San Sebastian and then Logrono, during the French invasion, when he wrote compositions that were mainly concentrated on the fortepiano and the harpsichord.

He composed many works that included masses, motets, carols, sonatas and music for piano.  His works were published in Seize SonataesAnciennes d’Auteurs Espagnols (Sixteen Old Sonatas of Spanish Authors) buts the only piece that is still regularly played is his “Sonata in D”.

He died in San Sebastian while in his 70s and when he was still carrying out duties as an organist and teacher in a chapel.

His son, Pedro, was also an outstanding musician, but he was unrelated to the composer Isaac Albeniz.
