He is a country music singer-songwriter born in Detroit, Michigan who was playing guitar professionally by the time he was 10 years old.
After he left college he wanted to become a Hollywood stuntman but worked with Dick Clark’s Caravan of the Stars instead as a promoter and emcee and during his time with them he also became the road manager and bodyguard for Herman’s Hermits.
He moved first to California and then to Nashville and began to write and record. His first single in 1968, “Color Blind” failed but in 1974 he had a minor hit with “Throw Away the Pages”. In 1976 he hit the Top 20 with his re-recording of “Twenty Four Hours from Tulsa” and from 1978 to 1979 he had four back-to-back Top 10 singles. His last chart single was “Don’t Leave Me Lonely Loving You” in 1983.
Recognised for his contribution to music he was an inductee to the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
