He is a guitarist and singer-songwriter born Randy Yeuell Owen in Fort Payne, Alabama and lived on a farm near Adamsburg. While still at high school he teamed up with his cousins Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook and they sang around Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In between the singing he also worked at jobs that included brick-laying and farming.
They became the successful group Alabama, and got their first recording contract in 1977 and first Top 40 hit in 1979 with “I Wanna Come Over”. He has co-written many of the band’s songs and is a Grammy Award and Country Music Association Award winner with the other members of the group. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame with the other members in 2005.
In 2008 he released the solo album One on One with three singles coming from it. Two of these, “Like I Never Broke Her Heart” and “Braid My Hair” reached the 40s on the Country Music chart.
He has been a member of the Board of Trustees for Jacksonville State University and was the host of Country Gold on Westwood One from 2012 to 2016.
