Hermann Abendroth established this orchestra in 1921 and their first concerts were led by him in the Rhine Chamber Music Festival and by Otto Klemperer in Bruhl Castle.
The ensemble moved to Leverkusen in 1926 after being taken over by Erich Kraak and in 1964 the leadership went to current Artistic Director, Helmut Muller-Bruhl. He began collaboration with international artists and took them on tours and since then they have made television and radio appearances, made numerous recordings and toured Asia, Europeand North and South America.
Under the name Capella Clementina they played on period instruments from 1976 to 1987 and since then they have used their usual name of Cologne Chamber Orchestra and play pieces set to the historical standard and practice, but on modern instruments.
They have made several successful recordings and won a Cannes Classical Award for Telemann’s Darmstadt Overtures.
