Early Music New York

This ensemble was established after several members of New York Pro Musica Antiqua and the director Frederick Renz founded the Early Music Foundation in 1974.

The Foundation wanted to expose the public to dramatic and musical performances that dated from the 11th to the 18th century, encapsulating western works from periods that include anything from medieval through to Classical.  It didn’t take long to become recognised and were very soon active at New York’s Cathedral of Saint John the Divine as the Artist-in-Residence where they continue to present their annual subscription series.

Early Music New York is part of the enterprise known as Early Music Foundation and have previously been known as New York’s Grande Bande of Original Instruments and New York’s Ensemble for Early Music.  The have had their current name since 2002.

Now a nationally and internationally recognised group of anywhere between 12 and 60 members, they are often called upon to appear at various acclaimed venues and music festivals the world over.  They stage medieval plays such as Daniel and the Lions and Le Roman de Fauvel and musical/vocal performances using original instruments under the directorship of Frederick Renz.

Regular guests on American television and radio, they are also active in the recording studio and have released in excess of 21 albums.  These include A Baroque Christmas, A Bohemian Christmas, Colonial Capers, A Dutch Christmas, Istanpitta! A Medieval Dance Band, A Medieval Christmas, Music for Medieval Love, Music of Renaissance Love, Music of Venice, A Renaissance Christmas and So Quick, So Hot, So Mad.
