This orchestra was founded as the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra by Leopold Stokowski in 1945 but disbanded two years later with the Los Angeles Philharmonic replacing them for the Bowl concerts.
In 1991 it was re-established as the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, with John Mauceri as director, to perform at the Independence Day fireworks concerts held over three nights. In the following years it has become highly acclaimed with tours throughout the world as well as at the Hollywood Bowl.
In the past 10 seasons the orchestra has performed with artists from all genres of music including Kathleen Battle, Luciano Pavarotti, Charlotte Church, the San Francisco Ballet, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, John Denver, Harry Connick Jr., The Moody Blues, The Chieftains and Sir George Martin.
In 1999 John Mauceri stepped down to allow the Honorable Richard J. Riordan, the mayor of Los Angeles, to make his conducting debut at the Hollywood Bowl.
Up until 2006 the orchestra had released 13 recordings and has received several awards and achieved Billboard chart entries.
The annual “Movie Night” concerts have the orchestra performing live accompaniment to film clips that are projected onto a big screen at the Bowl, and from the late 1990s the orchestra has collaborated on features by several studios.
