Gazouleas, Edward

Violist who attended the Curtis Institute of Music and Yale University and studied under Steven Ansell, Raphael Hillyer, Michael Tree, and Karen Tuttle.

In 1990, he became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Other groups with whom he has performed include the Boston Artists Ensemble, the Boston Pops, the Cezanne Quartet, the Chamber Orchestra of New England, Collage New Music, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the New York String Ensemble, the New York String Orchestra, the Nisaika Quartet, the Pensacola Chamber Music Festival, and the Pittsburgh Symphony.

In the late ‘90s and 2000s, he appeared on the Boston Pops albums, America, American Visions, The Celtic Album, Holiday Pops, My Favorite Things: A Richard Rodgers Celebration, and A Splash of Pops.

He shared the stage of the C. Walsh Theatre at Suffolk University with Collage New Music on 12^th January 2003 in a program that comprised Luciano Berio’s“Folk Songs”, Fred Lerdahl’s “Eros”, and Ralph Shapey’s “Gottlieb Duo”.

In November 2003, the Boston Artists Ensemble performed Johannes Brahms’ “Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115” at Peabody Essex Museum and TrinityChurch. They returned to Trinity on 25^th February 2007 for a recital of Antonin Dvorak’s “Quintet for String Quartet and Bass in G, Op. 77”, Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Quartet No. 8”, and the ever-popular mystery-piece-to-be-named-later. (If an audience member can name the piece and composer, they win free tickets to an upcoming concert.)

Edward and glass harmonica player Thomas Bloch, violinists Jason Horowitz and Elita Kang and cellist Jonathan Miller delivered the U.S. premiere of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s “Sonatina for Glass Harmonica and Strings” in April 2009.

On 27^th July 2009, he and other BSO musicians participated in the Lenox Athenaeum Music Festival with a recital of works by Felix Mendelssohn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. BSO members performed at Tuckerman Hall in Worcester on 15^th November 2009 in a concert of Claude Debussy’s “String Quartet in G minor” Ernst von Dohnanyi’s “Serenade in C for String Trio” and Janos Rolla’s “Duo for Violin and Viola”.

The Boston Artists Ensemble returned to Peabody Essex Museum on 5^th February 2010 for a performance of Zoltan Kodaly’s “Due for Violin and Cello, Op. 7” and Franz Schubert’s “String Quartet in G major, D. 887”.

On 16^th February 2010, Edward took part in a benefit/tribute concert for Doriot Anthony Dwyer, previously the principal flautist of the BSO, that consisted of Debussy’s “Syrinx”, a few of Dvorak’s “Cypresses”, Mozart’s “Flute Quartet in D, K. 285”, Francis Poulenc’s “Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano”, and Erwin Schulhoff’s “Concertino for Flute, Viola and Double Bass”.

Members of the BSO contributed their time and talent to another benefit concert at St. John’s Church in Williamstown on 7^th August 2010. The concert, the proceeds from which went to the Berkshire Humane Society, included Debussy’s “String Quartet in G minor” and Franz Joseph Haydn’s “String Quartet in D major, Op. 20, No. 4”.

On 10^th October 2010, Edward and keyboardist Pei-Shan Lee appeared at the Newton Free Library in a recital of Rebecca Clarke’s “Sonata for Viola and Piano”, Paul Hindemith’s “Sonata for Unaccompanied Viola” and Bohuslav Martinu’s “Sonata No. 1 for Viola and Piano”.

The Boston Artists Ensemble performed Dvorak’s “Quartet in A flat, Op. 105”, Schubert’s “Quartet in A minor” (“Rosamunde”) and yes—the ever-enticing mystery piece—at East India Marina Hall on 21^st January 2011.

On 1^st August 2011, tenor Dario Coletta teamed up with members of the BSO for a performance of “Il Tramonto” by Ottorino Respighi and P.H. Shelley. Rounding out the recital were Dvorak’s “String Quartet No. 12 in F major” (“American”) and Mozart’s “String Quartet No. 19 in C major, K. 465” (“Dissonant”).

Edward and harpist Franziska Huhn and flautist Elizabeth Ostling took part in a program that comprised Debussy’s “Sonata for Harp, Flute and Viola”, Franz Liszt’s “Un Sospiro” and Mendelssohn’s “String Quartet in D major, Op. 44” on 9^th August 2011.

On 6^th November 2011, BSO musicians presented a chamber concert at the James Library and Center for the Arts that included Michael Colgrass’s“Variations for Viola and Four Drums”, Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf’s “Duo for Viola and Double Bass” and Astor Piazzolla’s “Grand Tango”.

In the field of music education, Edward has taught at the Boston Conservatory, Boston University, the New England Conservatory, Swarthmore College, Temple University, and the University of Maryland.
