Fry, Peter

Percussionist from London who attended the Royal College of Music and went on to become a member of the Orchestra of the English National Opera and the Philharmonia.

It was with the Schoenberg Symphony Orchestra, however, that he was the timpani soloist in a performance of Andrzej Panufnik’s “Concertino” at Conway Hall on 6^th December 1986.

Recordings on which he appears with the Philharmonia include: The Big Country, Lawrence of Arabia; Debussy: Night in Granada – Nocturnes/ Clair de Lune; and, Arnold Schoenberg’s “Concerto, Op. 36” and Pelleas und Melisande, Op. 5, and arrangement of Johannes Brahms’ “Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25”.

On 7^th November 2002, the Philharmonia offered up an all-Tchaikovsky affair that comprised the master’s “Arabian Dance”, “Chinese Dance”, “Marche”, “Russian Dance” and “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker, “Orchestral Suite No. 3” and “Piano Concerto No. 1”, with Boris Berezovsky at the keys.

Peter and fellow Philharmonia instrumentalists, bassoonist Michael Cole, clarinetist Mark van de Wiel, horn player Laurence Davies and oboist David Theodore delivered the world premiere of Anthony Bailey’s “Reflections” via webcast in October 2005.

On 16^th October 2008, he was one of the featured soloists when the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra and Voices teamed up for Olivier Messaien’s La Transfiguration de Notre Seigneur at Royal Festival Hall.

In the field of music education, he has been active with the Philharmonia in their outreach programs and served on the staff of The Yorke Trust.
