He is a composer born in New York City who studied at the Eastman School of Music and was a pupil of Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland.
He began as a pianist for dance bands and theatre rehearsals before going on to concentrate on composition and later created the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop.
He has collaborated with many lyricists that include Sammy Cahn, Alan Jay Lerner, Lee Adams and Fred Tobias, with whom he wrote the Top 10 hit “Born Too Late”. Well known for his work on Broadway he has received Tony Awards for Bye Bye Birdie and Applause as well as the extremely successful Annie which also won two Grammy Awards. His music for film has appeared in movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, Ishtar, and There Was a Crooked Man. His 2005 musical You Never Know premiered in Providence, Rhode Island.
Less known for his classical compositions his works cover chamber and orchestral works and opera.
