Ostling, Elizabeth

Flautist from Ridgewood, New Jersey, who won first prize at the 1991 Olga Koussevitzky Young Artists Awards.  She attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated in 1994.  Her instructors included Jeffrey Khaner and Julius Baker.  She furthered her education at the Eastern Music Festival and Tanglewood Music Center.  While at Tanglewood, she performed “Caution to the Wind” by Michael Gandolfi at the Festival of Contemporary Music.

In 1994, she appeared on the compact disc, Ned Rorem:  Piano Concerto for the Left Hand; Eleven Studies for Eleven Players.  She became assistant principal flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the September of that year.  In March 1995, she moved up to acting principal flute.

She performed on the soundtrack of The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century in 1996.  In 1997, Michael Gandolfi wrote “Geppetto’s Workshop” on a commission from Elizabeth.  She advanced to associate principal flute of the BSO in time for their 1997-1998 season.  The Boston Pops also named her principal flute and she appeared on several of their recordings, such as The Celtic AlbumHoliday PopsThe Latin Album, and A Splash of Pops.

Other groups with whom she has worked include the Boston Artists Ensemble, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, the Greater Boston Flute Association, the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

On 29th April 2011, the Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra appeared at Jordan Hall where they performed Dan Coleman’s “Pavanes & Symmetries”, Mark O’Connor’s “The American Seasons”, and Richard Strauss’s “Metamorphosen”.

She and cellist Jonathan Miller, violinist Catherine French and violist Kazuko Matsusaka, performed “Flute Quartet in A, K. 298” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on 20th November 2005 at Bethany Congregational Church in Quincy, Massachusetts.  The same group, minus Catherine French plus Tatiana Dimitriades, interpreted Mozart’s “Flute Quartet No. 3, K. 285” at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem on 2nd December 2005.

On 4th December 2005, the Boston Artists Ensemble reprised “Flute Quartet No. 3” at TrinityChurch at Newton Centre.  The program was rounded out by “Introduction and Allegro for Flute, Harp, Clarinet and String Quartet” and “String Quartet in F” by Maurice Ravel, and “Trio for Viola, Harp and Flute” by Claude Debussy.

On 11th November 2007, Elizabeth participated in an Inside Out recital of Carl Nielsen’s “Wind Quintet” and Samuel Barber’s “Summer Music” at Arlington Street Church in Boston.  The concert was reprised at the Newton Free Library in Newton Centre on 10th February 2008.

On 25th July 2008, Elizabeth took part in the BSO’s prelude concert at Ozawa Hall in Lenox.  The evening consisted of works by John Corigliano, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Gioachino Rossini.

She was back with Inside Out at Arlington Street Church on 28th September 2008 in a program that comprised “La Cheminee du roi Rene” by Darius Milhaud and “Partita for Wind Quintet” by Irving Fine.

On 23rd October 2009, she performed Philippe Gaubert’s “Sonata No. 2” with pianist Carmen Rodriquez-Peralta as part of A World of Music Concert Series at Middlesex Community College in Bedford, Massachusetts.

She appeared in concert at the Newton Free Library on 7th March 2010 in a program that included “Concerto No. 2 after Vivaldi” and “Fugue in G minor” by Johann Sebastian Bach” and “Le Tombeau de Couperin” by Maurice Ravel.

On 21st November 2010, she performed “Kleine Kammermusik” by Paul Hindemith and “Six Bagatelles” by Gyorgy Ligeti at Arlington Street Church in Boston.

The BSO offered up “Night on Bald Mountain” by Modest Mussorgsky, “Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37” by Ludwig van Beethoven, with soloist Radu Lupu, and “Symphony No. 6 in E flat minor, Op. 111” at Symphony Hall on 5th February 2011.

On 1st April 2011, they performed “Mephisto Waltz No. 1” and “Orpheus” by Franz Liszt, “Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16” by Edvard Grieg, and “Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor” by Frederic Chopin, with Evgeny Kissin at the keys.

They teamed up with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus at Symphony Hall on 21st April 2011 for a performance of The Passion According to St. John, BWV 245, by J.S. Bach.

On 9th August 2011, Elizabeth and violist Edward Gazouleas and harpist Franziska Huhninterpreted “Sonata for Harp, Flute and Viola” by Claude Debussy, “String Quartet in D major, Op. 44” by Felix Mendelssohn and “Un Suspiro” by Franz Liszt.

She and oboist John Ferrillo and pianist Carmen Rodriquez-Peralta shared the stage at Ridgewood Christian Reformed Church on 1st November 2011 for a recital of music by Philippe Gaubert, Alberto Ginastera, Joachim Quantz, Robert Schumann, and George Philipp Telemann.

On 7th December 2011, the BSO invaded the San Francisco Bay for a concert that included “Daphnis et Chloe, Suite No. 2” by Ravel, “Flute Concerto” by Elliott Carter, “Symphony No. 4” by John Harbison, and “Symphony No. 1” by Gustav Mahler.

In the field of music education, she has served on the faculty of the Boston University College of Fine Arts.
