Russo, Joseph

He is a double bass player, pianist, composer and teacher who studied at the Juilliard School of Music and Yale University.

He has worked with many ensembles and orchestras since the early 1970s including the Greenwich Village Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony, National Orchestral Association Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra and the Springfield Symphony.  He has held the post of Prinicipal Bass with other orchestras such as the Opera & Ballet Orchestra of Mexico, Orchestra New Haven, Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra and the New York City Opera Touring Orchestra in shows such as Phantom of the Opera and the Opera & Ballet Orchestra of Mexico and has also held that post on Broadway productions of Camelot and Fiddler on the Roof.

Appearing on several recordings, he has featured on the soundtrack of Fifty Million Frenchman with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and The Whistler and His Dog and That Demon Rag by the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra.

He is currently a freelance musician who works with many orchestras and ensembles.

As a composer he has been writing music since the 1970s and his works include “Celebration”, “Concordance”, “Elegy and Prayer”, a flute and oboe concerto, a triple flute concerto and many other orchestral and chamber works.  His first symphony, written in 2004, was premiered by Orchestra New England.

As a teacher he has given masterclasses throughout Connecticut and at Yale and has also been a coach to chamber ensembles. He is also on the board of the Youth Orchestra and has given private lessons in piano and bass from his home in Weston, Connecticut, for nearly three decades.
