Gilsenan, Matthew

He is a singer born in North Meath, Ireland into a music loving family who began being classically trained in Kells at the Sisters of Mary Convent before moving on to the Dublin College of Music  and  being taught by several acclaimed Irish and Scottish singers.

He started out as an process engineer and at the same time performed as a classical and operatic singer. Taking part in several competitions in Ireland where he has achieved success and has given several performances of Oratorios such as Mass in C from Symphony No, 9 by Ludwig van Beethoven, Walpurgesnacht by Felix Mendelssohn, Messiah by George Frederic Handel, Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saens and other masses by Wolfgang Mozart and Antonin Dvorak.

He turned his interest to his native Irish music and became professional at the turn of the new millennium became an original member of the vocal group known as The Celtic Tenors.

He found success very quickly when the group’s debut album went to No. 1 in the Irish and German charts and No. 2 in the UK album chart.  The album also won and Echo Award in Germany for being the Best Classical Crossover Album.

He has since recorded several albums and travelled the world with The Celtic Tenors as well as performing for President Bill Clinton when he visited Dublin Castle in 2002.
