Barnes, Angela

French horn player who started out studying at eight years of age with her mom and then attended Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, England, in 1994. She furthered her education at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, from whence she graduated with first-class honours. Her teachers included Richard Bissill, Jeff Bryant, Lizzie Davis, Jonathan Lipton and Hugh Seenan.

On 26^th May 2002, she performed “Horn Concerto No. 2 in E flat” by Richard Strauss with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.

She became the first woman in the London Symphony Orchestra’s brass section in 2005.

Other groups with whom she has worked include the BBC Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Guildhall Gold Ensemble, the Lancashire Sinfonietta, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

On 12^th June 2010, she was a guest soloist of the Basingstoke Symphony Orchestra in a concert that included Richard Strauss’s “Horn Concerto No. 1”.

She and other horn players from the London area devoted their time and talent to a benefit concert for Pakistani flood victims on 29^th August 2010.

On 4^th February 2012, she and the Kantati Ensemble and tenor Paul Austin Kelly interpreted “Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings” by Benjamin Britten in Lewes, East Sussex.

Recordings on which she appears include Give it One and Guildhall Horn Soloists, with the Guildhall School Horn Ensemble.
