Milner, Paul

Trombonist from Edinburgh, Scotland, who started playing at seven years of age and went on to attend the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

In 1993, he became the principal bass trombonist of the Orchestra of Opera North in Leeds. He took the same position with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2007.

On 24^th August 2008, the LSO Brass Ensemble participated in the handing-over of the Olympics ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Their recital included “Blues March” by Benny Golson, “Fanfare” by Nigel Gomm, “Pavane Battaille” from La Danserie by Tylman Susato, “Of Knights and Castles” by Raymond Premru and “Tango Jalousie” by Jacob Gade.

The LSO offered up “Flute Concerto” by Carl Nielsen with soloist Gareth Davies, The Miraculous Mandarin suite by Bela Bartok and The Mermaid by Alexander von Zemlinsky at Barbican Hall on 9^th November 2011.

On 25^th November 2012, they performed Alban Berg’s “Violin Concerto” with Leonidas Kavakos and Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 1” (“Titan”). Semyon Bychkov conducted.

Recordings on which Paul appears include Halle Brass Play Gregson, and Kenneth Fuchs: Canticle to the Sun/United Artists with JoAnn Falletta and the LSO.

In the field of music education, he has taught at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and Salford University. His students have included Toby Bannan, Mark Francis and Adam Taylor. He has also given a master class to the YouTube Symphony Orchestra and has been active with the LSO Brass Academy and LSO Discovery program.
