Hall and Oates - Kiss On My List

Post by PapaMouse »

When they want to know
What the reason is
I only smile when I lie
So if he's telling the truth, he's frowning? I wonder if he was smiling when he said her kiss is on his list of the best things in life. I would when I say that about MamaMouse! But I can smile and tell the truth at the same time.
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,

If.

Post by PapaMouse »

(The Bread song, not the Malcolm McDowell movie.)
If a man could be two places at one time, I'd be with you
Tomorrow and today.
That's not "two places at one time". That's one place at two times.

Actually, I think it was MamaMouse who first pointed that out to me. She was a huge Bread/David Gates fan. But that one line amused/bemused her.

Drifting off to sleep with your teeth in your mouth

Everytime I hear this section, I think of everyone going to bed and pulling all their teeth out.

Oh and Vanessa Williams drives me crazy too in her "Save the Best for Last" song. Oh I know I'm being critical but the sun does not go around the moon! Sheesh!
I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way!

Well, there are some old people who sleep with their teeth in a glass on the nightstand.

Yep! I remember the first time I saw my grandmother's teeth in a glass on her night table. I thought to myself, "boy, she's gonna get a whole bunch of money from the tooth fairy!"

:P

It's My Party - Lesley Gore

Post by PapaMouse »

Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone
Judy left the same time
Why was he holding her hand
When he's supposed to be mine

...

Oh what a birthday surprise
Judy's wearin' his ring
So if Johnny's supposed to be Lesley's, why isn't she wearin' his ring? Apparently, Johnny doesn't think of Lesley as his.

Baby Come Back - Hall & Oates

wearing a mask of false bravado
But bravado is defined as "a pretentious, swaggering display of courage", implying that bravado is false courage. So does that mean "false bravado" is real courage?

Why would he need a mask of real courage?

'Drifting off to sleep with your teeth in your mouth'?

Soooo, does that mean you should take your teeth out before you drift off to sleep? :9449:

Convoy - C W McCall

We was headin' for bear on I-one-oh
'Bout a mile outta Shaky Town
Isn't "Shaky Town" what the CBers called San Francisco? But I-10 goes from Florida to Los Angeles. It's nowhere near SF! Certainly not "a mile outta" it.

Re: Don't Bring Me Down - ELO

Post by fiona »

The one that confuses me is "Don't Bring Me Down" written by Jeff Lynne for ELO.

I always thought, like many others, that the lyric said "Don't Bring Me Down....Bruce", whoever Bruce may be, but have since found out it's the German word "gross" which translates as greetings or compliments. That makes no sense either so I think I'm more than confused.:17418:
I'm not going to let my history pull me down and hold me back, you see.

Pink Shoelaces.

Post by PapaMouse »

The lyrics actually make sense, until you think about what's left out. Dodiie Stevens sings about her guy, Dooley, and his crazy clothes:
He wears tan shoes with pink shoelaces,
A polka-dot vest (and man oh man),
He wears tan shoes with pink shoelaces
And a big Panama with a purple hatband.
That's it? No socks with those tan shoes? No shirt under that polka-dot vest? What about pants? And underwear?

Doesn't exactly fit, but...

I've Told Every Little Star - Linda Scott

Post by PapaMouse »

I've told every little star
Just how sweet I think you are.
Why haven't I told you?

...

Friends ask me
Am I in love.
I always answer yes.
Might as well confess
If the answer's yes.
So if she tells her friends that she's in love, aren't they going ask with whom? And what's she going to say? "It's a secret."? (Like that would satisfy their curiosity!) Or maybe she says "I can't tell you, because he doesn't know yet." And her friends would say "Then tell him! Or tell me, and I'll tell him for you."
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,
How can I fear tomorrow?

You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) by Rod Stewart

Post by PapaMouse »

I admit it; I'm a member of the Grammar Police. (I'm a Grammar Cop?)

Well anyway, at one point he sings
You're an essay in glamour.
Please pardon the grammar,
But you're every schoolboy's dream.
I see no grammatical errors. Why would he have to say "Please pardon the grammar."?

Probably just because it rhymes with glamour.
