That's "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...)"

Post by PapaMouse »

Written by Mel Tormé, and made famous by Nat "King" Cole. I have recordings of it by Herb Alpert and TJB, Chicago, and the Vince Guaraldi Trio, but not by either Mr Tormé or Mr Cole.

Try these:

Born a king on Bethlehem's plain.
Gold I bring to crown him again.
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,
How can I fear tomorrow?

We Three Kings

Post by fiona »

(Thanks for the heads up PapaMouse  )

Here's more Christmassy ones...

Pray you, dutifully prime
Your matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime
Your evetime song, ye singers.

Re: Ding, Dong! Merrily On High!

I love that song, Fee. Good morning! :7207:

Next:

Overeating, merry greetings
From relatives you don't know.
Then comes that big night,
Giving the tree a trim.
You'll hear voices by starlight
Singing yuletide hollers...
I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way!

Mistletoe and Holly

Post by fiona »

Here's more along the same lines. I hope it made it over to the US.

A time for living, a time for believing
A time for trusting, not deceiving,
Love and laughter and joy ever after,
Ours for the taking, just follow the master.
I'm not going to let my history pull me down and hold me back, you see.

Okay, Fee...

I thought and thought on yours, but I couldn't come up with it. Finally I cheated and did some research. That was "Mistletoe and Wine" by Cliff Richard. It must not have made it over here which is a shame, because it sounds great!

Okay...let's see how good you guys are at some traditional country...

Ten years ago, on a cold, dark night
There was someone killed 'neath the Town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me
Toolin' down the highway doing 79,
I'm a twin-pipe papa and I'm feeling fine...

Long Black Veil

Oddly enough, the only recording I can recall hearing was by Joan Baez. Sounds sorta funny, a woman singing about being in her "best friend's wife". Especially since it was recorded in the mid-60s.

Try this one:

...The savior of [the savior of] the human race.
She invented medicinal compound.
Most efficacious in every case.

Meet Johnny Hammer had a t-t-terrible s-s-stammer.
He could b-barely say a word.
So they gave him medicinal compound,
And now he's seen, but never heard.
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,
How can I fear tomorrow?

Lily the Pink - The Scaffold

Post by fiona »

I loved this record when I was a kid but it wasn't until quite a while later I realised that the lead singer was Paul McCartney's brother.

OK you guys try these ones....

Well, I'm going down to Florida
Get some sand in my shoes
Or maybe California
Get some sand in my shoes
I'm not going to let my history pull me down and hold me back, you see.

Aaarrrghhhh....

I've been puzzling over this for days now. I KNOW it...what IS it? For some reason I keep thinking it's a country song. Hows about a little clue? :D

Think of the fiddle and that should point you in the right direction. 8)

That did it! It's "Orange Blossom Special" done by every country fiddler worth his salt!

Okay...try these:

All around there are girls and boys
It's a swingin' place, a cellar full of noise
It's got an atmosphere of its own somehow
You gotta come along right now cuz I tell you...
Toolin' down the highway doing 79,
I'm a twin-pipe papa and I'm feeling fine...

I Know a Place - Petula Clark

Post by PapaMouse »

I always liked her stuff. Her music was good, too.

Try these lyrics, just for fun:

I knew there's no-one cuter, then she said she was a puta
I said "What does puta mean?" Hmm and so she told me... (Oh no)
Then we went to meet a dealer, we smoked and drank tequila
Then the lights went out and I guess that's where she rolled me
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,
How can I fear tomorrow?

Good one!

That's "Acapulco Goldie" by Dr. Hook. I haven't heard that for quite a while!

Okay...these should be pretty easy...

And I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonopah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the backroads so I wouldn't get weighed
Toolin' down the highway doing 79,
I'm a twin-pipe papa and I'm feeling fine...

That's "Willin' "

Post by fiona »

I was just looking up stuff about the composer, Lowell George, yesterday. 8)

Try these ones which shouldn't be too difficult..

All your life you've never seen a woman
Taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven?
Will you ever win?
I'm not going to let my history pull me down and hold me back, you see.

Great minds are ALWAYS on the same wavelength! :D

Yours is "Rhiannon" by Fleetwood mac...one of my favorites!

Okay...try these. Shouldn't be too hard...

You should hear what they say about you. (cheatin’)
They say you’ve never, never been true. (wow ooooo)
It doesn’t matter what they say.
I’m gonna love you any old way,
What can I do when it’s true.
Toolin' down the highway doing 79,
I'm a twin-pipe papa and I'm feeling fine...

Baby, It's You.

Post by PapaMouse »

I've got recordings of it by The Carpenters, The Beatles (whose version I heard first), and The Shirelles (who were the ones who first recorded it.)

Try these:

How could she say to me
"Love will find a way"?
Gather round all you clowns
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,
How can I fear tomorrow?
