TV theme songs

Post by Gman316 »

There have been many excellent TV theme songs over the years. Some of them have become cultural icons, instantly recognized by almost everyone. Probably the most well known theme song is the theme from Hawaii Five-0, which became a huge hit on it's own. Other great TV themes include:

Star Trek
Rockford Files
Sanford and Son
All in the Family
Twilight Zone
The Equalizer
The Munsters
Addams Family
Cheers

All excellent in my opinion, and notice all of them are from 60's, 70's and 80's. Nothing modern or up to date, most TV shows these days seem to use generic theme songs or have none at all.

TV theme songs

All of those are great but I'll add in a few of our well known themes from the UK....

'Allo 'Allo
Dad's Army
Cadfael
Eastenders
Casualty
Taggart
Morse
The Life & Times of David Lloyd George
Poirot
Heartbeat

There's loads more but these are ones that I can think of straight away.
I'm not going to let my history pull me down and hold me back, you see.

I was in high school when Hawaii Five-O was on the air.

We learned to play it in band. It was one of the more popular songs we played.

I also liked:
Dick Van Dyke
Route 66
77 Sunset Strip
Perry Mason
Peter Gunn
Rawhide

There were some TV shows that used songs from the Public Domain:
The Danny Thomas Show/Make Room For Daddy ("Danny Boy".)
The Huntley/Brinkley Report (Beethoven's Fifth, second movement)
The Lone Ranger (finale from the William Tell Overture)
Lord, you have filled my cup so full,
How can I fear tomorrow?

Heard of some of these shows. Eastenders, Morse, and Poirot are the ones I know, the other not. Most UK shows are on Public stations, or BBC Canada which is a specialty channel. Coronation Street is another, my Mom watches it religiously.

I think one of my favourites is Taggart and I seem to remember something about the US making noises about taking it over to show on TV there.

I don't think it came to anything as I think they wanted it sub-titled because people wouldn't understand our Glaswegian accent. :P

Personally I love the Father Ted theme tune by the Divine Comedy, it was later turned into a song called Songs of Love.

What TV show from the 50s and 60s used as its theme song Gounod's "Funeral March for a Marionette"?
