Marriner, Andrew (25 February 1954-Present)

Clarinetist and educator and son of world-renowned conductor and violinist, Sir Neville Marriner. As a lad, he sang in the Choir of King’s College at Cambridge. He became of member of the National Youth Orchestra in 1968. His musical education included stops in Hanover, Germany, where he studied under the watchful eye of Hans Deinzer, and Oxford University.

In 1977, he made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sergiu Celibidache. He served as guest principal on the LSO’s international tour in 1983. By 1986, he was Principal Clarinet of both the LSO and Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which was conducted by his famous father.

Other groups with whom he has worked include the Chilingirian Quartet, the London Mozart Players, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, the Sacconi Quartet, and the YouTube Symphony.

He gave the world premiere of “Clarinet Concerto, Op. 30” by Douglas Weiland with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra at the Marriner Festival in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall on 19^th November 2009.

On 26^th September 2010, he and bassoonist Rachel Gough and the LSO offered up the “Duett-Concertino” by Richard Strauss at Barbican Hall. It was sandwiched between “Concerto for Orchestra No. 1” (“Naughty Limericks”) by Rodion Shchedrin and “Symphony No. 5” by Gustav Mahler.

He participated in the Buxton Festival in 2012 where he collaborated with pianist Stephen Barlow and the Sacconi Quartet. He and Stephen interpreted “An die musik, Standchen” by Franz Schubert, “Carnival in Venice” by Alamiro Giampieri, “Concertino in E flat, Op. 26” by Carl Maria von Weber, “Entracte” from La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi, “Four Pieces, Op. 5” by Alban Berg, and “Sonatina” by Joseph Horovitz. His set with the Sacconi Quartet included the “Clarinet Quintet” of Johannes Brahms.

In the field of music education, he has worked as an adjudicator in competitions, orchestral coach and woodwind consultant, taught master classes, and served on the faculties of Accademia de la Musica in Rome and the Royal Academy of Music.
