Patterson, Mark (8 April 1960-Present)

Arranger, composer and trombonist from Evergreen, Colorado, who studied music with his father, Dick Patterson, a bassist and trombonist. His other teachers included Dale Bruning, Tasso Harris, Dick McGee, Spike Robinson and Ron Washington. He attended the University of Denver where he studied with David Caffey, Joe Docksey and Donald Keats. He furthered his education after relocating to the Big Apple where he attended the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop with Manny Albam, Bob Brookmeyer and Jim McNeely.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra, Area 51, the Asuka Kakitani Jazz Orchestra, Band of Bones, Bob Gillis’s Inner Ear Orchestra, the Central City Opera, the Concordia Orchestra, Convergence, the Dean Bushnell Orchestra, the Dennis Mackrel Big Band, the Earl MacDonald Jazz Orchestra, the Gotham Jazz Orchestra, the Gotham Wind Symphony, the Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble, the Group Stories Quintet, the JC Sanford Jazz Orchestra, the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, Kimon & the Prophets, the Manhattan Bones, the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Newyorkestra, the New York Pops, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Orchestra Sinfonica Carlo Coccia, the Ridgefield Symphony, the Schumacher/Sanford Sound Assembly, Steely Dan, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the Westchester Jazz Orchestra.

The Dean Bushnell Orchestra played the Pinehurst Country Club and Turn of the Century in 1978 and 1982, respectively.

On 23^rd September 2006, Bob Gillis’s Inner Ear Orchestra participated in Dale Bruning Celebration Day at the Broomfield Auditorium in Colorado.

Mark accompanied Steely Dan at the Wells Fargo Theater in Denver on 29^th October 2009.

On 27^th June 2010, The John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble kicked off the Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial Center in New York.

The JC Sanford Orchestra gave the world premiere of Sanford’s “Brooklyn Vignettes” at The Tea Lounge on 27^th March 2011.

In January and May 2012, Convergence accompanied Robert Gambarina and Rene Marie, respectively, at Dazzle Jazz in the Mile High City.

Mark’s Broadway credits include Annie, Anything Goes, 42^nd Street, Monty Python’s Spamalot and South Pacific.

If you watch carefully, you can catch a glimpse of him in the Woody Allen film Radio Days as a member of the band that is accompanying Diane Keaton.

In the field of music education, he has taught at the City College of New York, Jazz in the Sangres, Mile High Jazz Camp, New York University, Temple University and the College of Music at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
