Cobb, Philip (1987/8-Present)

Trumpeter who grew up in a musical family and played in a Salvation Army band, with his family have been linked with the Salvationist music for several generations.  In addition to the trumpet, he has also played the cornet, flugelhorn and piccolo trumpet.  He attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and studied with Alison Balsom and Paul Beniston.

Groups with whom he has worked include the Barbican Brass, the Brass Band Aid Celebrity Band, the Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Dockland’s Sinfonia, Eminence Brass, the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Guildhall Brass Band, the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, the London Chamber Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, the New England Brass Band, Superbrass, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

In 2009, he became Joint Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra.

One of his early solos with them occurred on 28th June 2010 at Barbican Hall, where he performed the “Trumpet Concerto in E flat” of Johann Nepomuk Hummel.

In May 2009, he took solo turns on “Concerto for Trumpet, Piano and Strings” by Dmitri Shostakovich and “Cuban Overture” by George Gershwin.

He and fellow Joint Principal Trumpet Nigel Gomm gave a masterclass to the YouTube Symphony Orchestra in 2011.

On 27th June 2012, the LSO Brass Quintet participated in the City of London Festival at Goldsmith’s Hall with the world premiere of “A Golden Fanfare” by Francisco Coll.

Philip helped open the 2012 Paralympics with soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, who sang “Eternal Source of Light Divine” by Franz Joseph Haydn.  He helped close out the 2012 Olympics by playing solo trumpet as the Olympic flames were extinguished.
