Copes, Steven (1971-Present)

Concertmaster and violinist from Los Angeles, California, who attended Crossroads School, the Curtis Institute, Juilliard, and the New York String Orchestra Seminar.  His teachers included Felix Galimir, Robert Lipsett, Robert Mann, and Aaron Rosand.

From 1996 to 1998, he was a member of the Colorado Symphony.  He became the concertmaster of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in 1998.

Other groups with whom he has worked include Accordo (which he co-founded), the Baltimore Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, El Paso Pro Musica, the London Philharmonic, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the New Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Sioux City Symphony.

In 2003, he and the SPCO delivered the world premiere of “Violin Concerto No. 2” by George Tsontakis.

He and pianist Pedja Muzijevic and cellist Wilhelmina Smith performed an all-Beethoven Chestnut Hill Concert that featured the German master’s “Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70, No. 1” (“Ghost”) and “Violin Sonata in C minor, Op. 30, No. 2” on 1st August 2008.

On 31st January 2010, Accordo debuted at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where they interpreted “Concertino for String Quartet” by Igor Stravinsky, “Sonata for Violin & Cello” by Maurice Ravel and “String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10” by Claude Debussy.

Steven and pianist Shai Wosner offered up Stravinsky’s “Divertimento” and “Duo Concertant” along with Beethoven’s “Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Op. 23” at Saint Anthony Park United Church of Christ on 30th January 2011.

On 9th and 10th July 2012, he and fellow violinist Jennifer Frautschi, pianist Gilbert Kalish, violist Cynthia Phelps and cellist Ronald Thomas participated in Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon, where they performed “Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44” by Robert Schumann.

He and violist Roberto Diaz and cellist Tessa Seymour appeared at Cook Theatre in Sarasota, Florida on 6th February 2013, when they performed “Serenade in C major, Op. 10” by Ernst von Dohnanyi and “Trio in E flat major, Op. 3” by Beethoven.

In the field of music education, he has coached and/or taught at the Colorado College Summer Festival, Indiana University, the National Orchestral Institute in Maryland, Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois, the University of Minnesota, and Western Michigan University.
